thinking of

permanently moving to tumblr.

too many venues to update! i don't even know how much i like cultivating a blogging personality, since i have yet to find the balance between maintaining my privacy, but being able to share profoundly when public.

facebook, twitter, blogger, xanga (yes, i still read my subscriptions), flickr... i'm really starting to understand why it's called 'the web'!

i want to stay connected to everyone and everything, but i refuse to become a prisoner of the internet.

Img_0001.jpg
didn't touch any settings, just put on the lens, stuffed in the battery and memory card (ok, not stuffed. i did it so gently i was afraid i didn't put it in all the way), took a look around, and pressed the big black button.

now i'm off to explore every nook and cranny of this expensive sucker.

feel free to click the image for a wonderful life-size cut of my boyfriend playing gears of war.

WOOOHOOOOOOOOO!

mom on gchat + smelly things = i ♡ taiwan

my mom's in china, so we communicate largely through gchat, since it's quick, easy, and free. she often asks about how school is going, as she did tonight, followed by a very abrupt and random farewell:

我看報紙說中國有好多Amyway的人去台灣旅遊,有人說想要吃“娃娃煎”!哈哈!要油炸baby嗎?他們想吃“蚵仔煎”啦!他們不會說台灣話啦哈哈哈,我要去吃飯了.愛妳!bye

now i don't know what "Amyway" means (perhaps Amway?), but translated, this means:

i read on the newspapers in china that a lot of "amyway" people go vacationing in taiwan, and some people say "i want to eat 'infant omelettes'!" haha! want oil-fried baby? they want to eat 'oyster omelette'! they don't know how to speak taiwanese! hahaha, i'm going to eat now. love you! bye"

well, it's much funnier in chinese, especially if you know the difference between "wa-wa jian" and "o-wa jian."

i really want to go back to taiwan, and the cigarette smoke coming from the neighbors downstairs totally reminds me of being at the night markets, wandering through the messy array of street vendors, with all sorts of pollutants competing for lung space. same with the smell from the gutters on the sidewalk. it's funny how so rank and foul a stench can put such a smile on my face.

oh, how i miss you.

lots of thread + lots of backstitching = works in progress!

ricky came up with this idea last last christmas, while we were in taiwan. we passed a hoodie that had a sick design. looked at the price tag, totally not worth. "hey, why don't we do this ourselves?"

sounds like a good idea. we bought plain white sweaters at ross/marshalls, and i plotted a graph of blue painter's tape, mapped out the colors, then stitched away. but after a few months, i needed a break, and unfortunately, that break has lasted a year. i'm coming back to them now, since i'll be graduated (!) and working part-time in two weeks. this is my chance to really go crazy with all the things on my to-do list.

anyway, here's what mine looks like so far (sorry for bad picture quality, still using point-and-shoot!); the blue tape pieces left on there are what i haven't finished on the front yet:

close(r)-up:

i plan to finish the 5 colored crosses over the sleeves, the back, and the hood, too. perhaps also the hoodie strings?

for ricky's i was little more ambitious... chester showed me a t-shirt with a screen-printed inverted great wave of kanagawa-esque graphic, and i thought that would be really cool to stitch an outline of it onto the sweater. this one is taking considerably longer b/c of all the backstitching, but i wanted it really reinforced and sturdy to last all the wonderful years of wear to come. the blue tape of the whitewater is a rough estimate of future refinement, but here's where things stand with this one:

it also connects from the back of the sweater to the front on the left side:

phew. lots of work ahead of me. but i'm super excited to see the end result... stay posted!

daylight savings + only 10 more days of winter = rejoice!

i changed all my profile pictures because the current one represents an attitude, a mindset, a feeling that i've been missing for a long time. it's not that i've been depressed or anything, but this winter has just felt way too long, and i'm so ready for the sunshine to never end.

keepin' it short; here's me:

needle/thread + new button = better fitting jeans!

i realized why i like baking so much. it's arts-n-crafts you can eat. i love making things, especially intricate things. i love working with my hands and challenging myself to attend the smallest details for a glorious big picture.

i had the epiphany about baking yesterday, and i just thought of it again today, when i fixed a pair if skinny jeans so that they would fit better. all i did was sew a new button onto the waist for a slimmer fit, but i had such a sense of achievement, like i was single-handedly responsible for how well it fits from waist to butt to thigh to calf to ankle, like the whole thing was accomplished by me.

perhaps this is the along the line of me being easily amused, but i take delight in the little things in life. a smile, a hello. a daisy on the side of the road. a little puff of a cloud in the sky. a ladybug wandering on the hood of my car. the last chocolate pudding waiting for me in the fridge...

two interesting tidbits

numéro une.

apparently doodling helps you pay attention, because it prevents you from daydreaming. so i guess my pages full of random insanity helped me pass those gen. ed. math and chem classes my freshman year.

link: i love doodling!

numéro deux.

the first time i ever bs-ed an assignment was in second grade. it was show-and-tell day, but i forgot to bring something to class. the only thing i had in my backpack was a banana. and it was spotted, not all smooth now-and-later yellow as all bananas should be. quick as i am, when it came my turn, i held up my spotty banana in front of the whole class and declared, "i know this is just a banana, but i brought this to show everyone today, because i call this a dalmation banana."

i think it actually delighted my teacher. "how clever!" she said. oh, little did she know... little did she know.

life is throwing sour lemons.

yes, i know, lemons are sour. but boy, were they sour this week.

first, a sinus infection, complete with fever, headache, dizziness, and toss in a cough or two.
add in the female monthly cycle, along with its cramps of glory.

this is one hell of a recipe for misery.

on top of that, canceled a week's worth of work, and i still need to study for a midterm.

so here i am, with a mountain of crumpled tissues to my left, a text book to my right, and i'm wishing that i could be 5 years old again, blowing bubbles for no one in particular and getting myself all soapy with not a care in the world.

yet, i wouldn't trade where i am now, with any moment from the past. how funny life is.

thank you, ricky, for not just bearing with me, but soothing my aches with fuzzy bears and chocolate milk. everything a little girl needs when she's got a bad case of the sniffles.

and now, a baby beaver:

you can't be serious

i was at brea mall today with my mom, shopping for "american" gifts for her chinese friends, and as we passed through macy's, i saw one of these:

(i didn't actually get a picture of it, so i found one online)

i thought to myself, you can't be serious. so instead of "doritos or a kit kat today?" it's become "a nano or just little white earbuds today?" are we so spoiled and flagrantly wasteful that we have automated machines churning out ridiculously overpriced gadgets we don't even need, while the country (not to mention the rest of the world) is up in flames about being "economically responsible" because we can't all agree what it would look like to be so?

i'm more incredulous than disgusted, but it's pretty upsetting to see that our american sense of insatiably impatient materialism has escalated thus far.

limbo

i'm in theme limbo. i still haven't decided what kinds of stuff i'll be posting... all i know is that i want them to be consistent in some way. i also know that posts are more fun and enticing when there are pictures, so here's one from this week:

i took a shamelessly stalkerific picture of a skater punk dude who apparently likes hello kitty. note the hanging keychain, and the faint white-out tattoo of hello kitty's face to the left of the keychain.

hello fellow globbers!

i've been convinced, oh so easily, to start a blog. so here i am! as of this moment, i have nothing clever nor witty to say, so i shall be off to find myself a decent lunch. i leave you with the awesomest cupcake in the world.
