you can't be serious

i was at brea mall today with my mom, shopping for "american" gifts for her chinese friends, and as we passed through macy's, i saw one of these:

(i didn't actually get a picture of it, so i found one online)

i thought to myself, you can't be serious. so instead of "doritos or a kit kat today?" it's become "a nano or just little white earbuds today?" are we so spoiled and flagrantly wasteful that we have automated machines churning out ridiculously overpriced gadgets we don't even need, while the country (not to mention the rest of the world) is up in flames about being "economically responsible" because we can't all agree what it would look like to be so?

i'm more incredulous than disgusted, but it's pretty upsetting to see that our american sense of insatiably impatient materialism has escalated thus far.

  1. Yeah, first time I saw this was the Macy's at Third Street in Santa Monica. Sure catches the eye, but I've never seen anybody use it. You can get replacement earbuds anytime you go to an apple store! No sense in getting those ill-fitting earbuds in the vending machine.
